The Ayer Cabin

The Ayer Cabin

Location: Ayer, Valais, Swiss Alps

Year: 2012

Architecture: Mijong

Photography: Johannes Marburg

Abandoned for 30 years, the Mayen in the Anniviers Valley has undergone a careful renovation to restore and connect its two volumes: the house and the barn. The existing wooden structure has been preserved, with damaged pieces replaced to ensure structural integrity. The project focuses on sustainability, harnessing local renewable resources to meet the Mayen’s needs, from water sourced from the nearby forest to energy provided by thermal solar panels and photovoltaics.

Energy Independence and Self-Sufficiency

The renovated Mayen is entirely self-sustaining, with no external connections to utilities. The water system is supplied by a natural spring, while the wood-burning stove serves multiple purposes, from cooking to heating the home and providing hot water. Solar technology further enhances the cabin’s efficiency, with thermal solar panels pre-warming water and photovoltaic panels generating electricity.

Modern Comfort in a Traditional Setting

The integration of modern technology ensures year-round comfort, while maintaining the rustic charm of the cabin. The ground floor hosts technical appliances, and the main living areas—kitchen, dining, and bathroom—are on the entrance level. The upper floor is dedicated to sleeping quarters. With insulated walls, roofs, and floors, as well as new windows, the Mayen meets contemporary standards of comfort while respecting its historical roots. The structure’s minimal changes preserve the authentic Alpine aesthetic.
