A Plot Shaped by Generations

Located at the edge of the historic village center of Schwarzenberg, The House Schwarzenberg brings living and working together under one roof. Originally conceived as a single-family home, the project evolved into a shared building with a long-term perspective. The intention was to use a family-owned plot not for one phase of life, but across generations, focusing on flexibility, shared use, and responsible resource management.

Designing Trust, Not Just Space

Choosing a multi-generational living model required careful coordination beyond architectural questions. A young couple and their parents consciously redefined expectations, boundaries, and everyday routines. Continuous dialogue and close collaboration with local craftspeople shaped a process rooted in trust, openness, and shared learning, allowing the project to develop with clarity and mutual respect.

A Logic of Care

The building volume is conceived as a compact timber-frame structure with beam ceilings. Regional wood, partly sourced from the family’s own forest, forms the primary structural system. Material decisions followed clear ecological criteria, emphasizing regional origin, durability, reversibility, and healthy interior conditions. Clay panels are used extensively inside, providing thermal mass and supporting a balanced indoor climate, complemented by a natural, dismantlable floor build-up.

Many Lives

Private living units are combined with shared spaces and an integrated office, enabling everyday life, family interaction, and work to coexist within one structure. Permeable outdoor surfaces allow rainwater to infiltrate on site and mediate between interior spaces and the surrounding landscape. The project demonstrates how social cohesion, ecological responsibility, and regional building culture can merge into a resilient and adaptable architectural model.
