A Continuation of History
The Moudon Transformation redefines adaptive architecture in the heart of Moudon’s old town. Rather than contrasting the historic fabric, the project extends it with quiet precision, respecting the protected structure while introducing contemporary living. The intervention maintains the legibility of past and present, ensuring the building’s heritage remains intact.

Innovative Solutions within Constraints
Faced with a flat roof initially intended as a shared terrace, the architects opted for a bold yet respectful approach. A Mansard roof, clad in natural slate, was chosen despite local regulations favouring traditional tiles. This “hors norme” solution was accepted by heritage authorities, as it aligned with the annex’s historical construction period. The result is a six-paned, diamond-like roof that seamlessly integrates into the dense urban surroundings.

Privacy in a Dense Landscape
The design prioritises intimacy despite the proximity of neighbouring structures. The terrace, overlooking the medieval canal, features lateral “blinders” to limit visibility from neighbours, channelling views towards the scenic escape. This thoughtful detail ensures privacy while preserving the connection to Moudon’s historic charm.

Prefabricated Efficiency
Given the site’s limited access, a prefabricated wooden structure was assembled in just a day and a half. The use of slate for the entire roof required a double-layered corrugated metal sheet to ensure waterproofing, replacing the typical zinc solution. This minimalist approach harmonises with the sharp lines of the roof, creating a cohesive aesthetic both inside and out.
