A Global Family’s Alpine Retreat
A Russian/American family with eight children sought a neutral, safe haven among the rolling hills and peaks of the Slovenian Alps and Pre Alps. The Banj plateau, with its dry karst landscape and traditional stone architecture, became their chosen home. The old homestead in Kanalski Lom was to be the new base aiming to blend modern living with the region’s heritage.

Preserving Heritage with Modern Vision
OFIS Architects convinced the family to integrate the existing stone houses—though unprotected—into their new design. The project became a sociological and architectural challenge, addressing cultural and logistical hurdles, including the remote location’s accessibility. The preserved structures underwent radical renovation, with reinforced concrete and wall injections ensuring stability.

Bridging Tradition and Contemporary Design
The new entrance wing connects the old buildings, echoing vernacular traditions while using modern materials. Grey facade panels complement the stone, while wood dominates the interiors, creating a warm contrast to the exposed stone and concrete walls. The design remains simple, respecting the original character.

A Timeless Fusion
The Kanalski Lom Mansion resolves the “old or new” dilemma by merging tradition with sensitive modernisation. Thoughtful details and responsible design allow both to coexist, proving that continuity is a perfectly possible path forward.
