Urban Fabric and Green Transition

The Stadthäuser Sempach reinterpret the characteristic duality of the town’s structure. Along the Stadtstrasse and Oberstadt, continuous rows of buildings define a dense urban edge, while their rear sides open into green spaces and gardens. Positioned between these conditions, the historic house on Kronengasse acts as a mediator, connecting public street life with the quieter, planted intermediate zone.

A Slender Architectural Addition

The new intervention is set apart from the existing structure by a narrow joint, emphasizing the contrast between old and new. While the original building appears broad and solid, the extension rises as a slender, vertical volume. Replacing a former barn, the new structure clarifies the composition and reinforces the presence of the historic house within the urban fabric.

Living and Shared Spaces

Each of the two townhouses accommodates two residential units. The ground-floor apartment in the existing building is accessed directly from Kronengasse, while the remaining units are reached through a newly formed courtyard space. This semi-public area creates a subtle transition between street and home. Beneath the new building, the cultural cellar “Im Schtei” is complemented by a foyer at street level, adding a communal layer to the project.

Material Dialogue and Craft

Following the character of Sempach, the buildings are defined by mineral surfaces. The new structure is cast in concrete with a bush-hammered finish, contrasting gently with the plastered facade of the original house. While one surface is applied and the other carved, their visual proximity creates cohesion. Inside, timber sourced from local forests introduces warmth, forming a tactile dialogue between solid mineral elements and crafted wood interiors.
