Responding to a long and narrow site

In the Allgäu town of Immenstadt, Architektur + Raum designed a two-story residence that maximizes its slender site—just 15 meters deep and 46 meters long. The plot’s unique proportions shaped the building’s elongated form, which features a traditional gabled roof and a detached covered seating area that frames a private courtyard. Constructed using a hybrid method of concrete and solid wood, the house merges structural resilience with tactile warmth while maintaining a strong dialogue with its Alpine setting.

Material contrasts and visual flow

The base level is clad in natural limestone, grounding the structure and anchoring it visually to the landscape. Above, rough-sawn white fir provides a textural counterpoint and softens the building’s overall appearance. Large glazed openings on the ground floor connect interior spaces to the garden, allowing sunlight to pour in throughout the day. A double-height atrium links the open-plan kitchen to the upper floor, while a sunken lounge with a built-in sofa and a stone-clad fireplace forms the social heart of the home.

Connected living across two levels

The upper floor continues the home’s open, flowing spatial arrangement. A central gallery—used as a home office—acts as a connective element between bedrooms, bathrooms, and storage areas. Despite the programmatic separation, the spatial design encourages interaction and openness. Carefully considered openings and interior sightlines maintain a constant relationship between different parts of the house, reinforcing the home’s familial and architectural cohesion.

Natural materials and regional inspiration

Throughout the home, natural materials are used to create a quiet, welcoming atmosphere. Exposed concrete, white fir, clay-plastered walls, and regional limestone offer a layered palette of textures that age gracefully over time. The detailing reflects a commitment to craftsmanship and local tradition, while the spatial layout remains contemporary and adaptive. The result is a house that feels both grounded in its place and responsive to the needs of everyday life.
