The Stöckli, a traditional “Auszughaus” in some areas of Switzerland, serves as a home for retiring farmers once the farm is passed on to the next generation. At Ettershof, situated near the Swiss Alps, this tradition is reimagined in a contemporary design that complements the unique character of the landscape.

Honoring history while adapting to change
The historic farmhouse, built in 1808, stands as a striking landmark, surrounded by fields that lend the area a rare tranquility. The challenge was to introduce a new building that honored the beauty of this setting while accommodating the evolving needs of the retiring farmers, offering them a space to relax, connect with nature, and embrace a new rhythm of life.

Located to the south of the farmstead, the Stöckli balances proximity and seclusion—close enough to remain part of the property but removed from the daily bustle of farm operations. Unlike the bold, iconic farmhouse, the new building takes a more understated approach, blending subtly into the landscape.

Seamlessly integrated with its surroundings
Its design emphasizes a connection to the landscape, with all rooms oriented southward along an enfilade and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the surrounding scenery. Covered arbors, paved in patterns and supported by oak pillars, provide a graceful transition from the meadow to the house while offering shelter and a sense of calm.

This addition enhances the Ettershof’s legacy, creating a space where tradition meets modern living. While the historic farmhouse reflects the priorities of its time, the Stöckli embraces the present, making nature its central theme. Humble yet distinct, the building respects the grandeur of its predecessor while offering a dignified retreat, perfectly attuned to the rhythm and tranquility of the landscape.
