A Barn Reimagined in Satarma by Galletti + Matter

This barn conversion in Satarma, designed by Galletti + Matter, reflects a deliberate design approach that questions assumptions and embraces alternative solutions. Every element in the renovation process was carefully considered to meet essential standards of comfort and usability, without compromising the building’s original spirit. The result is an alpine retreat that merges architectural integrity with contemporary living.

Tradition Respected, Not Imitated

Instead of replicating the past, the design draws from local heritage while confidently evolving it. The use of regional materials preserves a sense of continuity, but the approach avoids superficial restoration. Solid wood, central to the original structure, remains exposed and celebrated. New timber additions, referencing traditional barn planks, are arranged in staggered patterns, giving the façade a dynamic yet grounded presence. A stone roof—required by local codes—has been executed with refined modern details, including cantilevered eaves and offset panels.

Material Honesty at the Core

Inside, the architects prioritized authenticity over embellishment. Larch wood defines the atmosphere, wrapping walls, ceilings, and finishes in warm tones. Small black slate tiles line the kitchen and bathroom floors, as well as stairwell walls, with light-colored joints adding subtle texture. The use of laminated wood floors without added insulation or finish layers reflects a minimalist sensibility, emphasizing structural clarity and material honesty in a space designed for family life.

Heating That Anchors the Space

Two soapstone stoves—one preserved from the original barn and one new pellet version—serve as the home’s primary heat source. Their presence reinforces the building’s central purpose: to offer shelter that aligns with its Alpine context. The transformation doesn’t merely modernize; it creates a living space that feels rooted, resilient, and thoughtfully attuned to its environment.
