A New Structure at the Village Edge
Positioned at the southern entrance of the swiss town, Ellikon am Rhein, The House Ellikon occupies a prominent site within a ISOS protected settlement and BLN protected landscape. Its scale, volume, and roof orientation draw from the surrounding rural buildings, continuing the village’s historic grain. Two carefully composed structures create a sequence of courtyard spaces, mediating between the public street and private outdoor areas while reinforcing the spatial clarity of the local settlement pattern.

A Composition of Two Volumes
The project is defined by a main house and a smaller ancillary structure, arranged with clear hierarchy. The footprint of the main building follows the proportions of traditional houses, topped by a calm 30-degree pitched roof reminiscent of agricultural barns. In contrast, the secondary structure is designed as a simple, subordinate volume with a modest shed roof. Together they frame the courtyard and extend the architectural language of the surrounding farmstead typologies.

Facades Responding to Orientation
The facades react differently to each side of the site. Toward the open landscape on the south, west, and north, the building appears restrained and composed. The eastern side opens through a permeable loggia that forms a gentle transition between house and garden. Timber slats filter light and views while supporting structural elements. On the north facade, the entrance is marked by a modest metal canopy, accompanied by carefully integrated exterior lighting and mailbox details.

Interior Structure and Material Expression
Inside, the timber construction remains clearly legible, referencing the structural logic of traditional wooden barns. A wide structural grid organizes the spaces, while concrete is used sparingly for the base, staircase, and fireplace, giving these elements a sculptural presence. A double-height space beside the staircase visually connects the floors and reinforces the generous scale suggested by the exterior. The slightly lowered living room introduces intimacy, while visible craftsmanship and materials define the atmosphere.
