Preserving scale and character
In the heart of a protected village core, a young local family transformed a modest 31-square-meter plot into a thoughtful and efficient single-family home. The site, once occupied by a small stable, lies within a zone defined by heritage conservation regulations. These guidelines required the new construction to respect the scale, volume, and presence of the original building. Rather than expanding outward or upward, the project embraced restraint, demonstrating how contemporary living can thrive within tight historic boundaries.

A volume shaped by memory
The design retains the footprint and general silhouette of the former stable, subtly reinterpreted for residential use. By working within the original volume, the house integrates seamlessly into its traditional surroundings while introducing a new typology to the village core. Careful attention was paid to proportions, materiality, and detailing, ensuring the new building feels rooted rather than imposed. The result is a compact home that reflects both local heritage and modern spatial needs.

Efficiency meets comfort
Inside, the architecture makes the most of its limited dimensions. A highly efficient floor plan provides space for all essential domestic functions without feeling cramped. Daylight is introduced through strategically placed openings, while vertical space is used to create visual depth and a sense of openness. Smart storage solutions, multi-functional furniture, and clear zoning support everyday life, proving that comfort is not a question of size but of intelligent design.

A model for sensitive infill
This project exemplifies how small-scale interventions can enrich historic environments. By reusing a neglected volume and respecting the spatial logic of its context, the new home becomes part of the village’s ongoing story. It offers a compelling model for future infill developments in heritage areas—one that prioritizes continuity, humility, and high-quality living within existing frameworks.
