The Aulina House

The Aulina House

Location: Flumserberg, St. Gallen , Swiss Alps

Year: 2021

Architecture: Oliver Christen

Photography: Rasmus Norlander

Situated at the foot of the Aulinakopf hill, Aulina House rests on the edge of a high plateau, offering uninterrupted views of Lake Walen and the Churfirsten mountain range. As one of the last structures in the scattered settlement, it harmonizes with its Alpine surroundings while maintaining a strong presence in the landscape.

With a compact footprint of just 53 m², the wooden replacement structure is designed like a refined box, blending seamlessly into its environment. Its meticulously crafted facades feature vertical timber cladding with varying depths, creating a delicate interplay of light and texture. The house presents different expressions—when unoccupied, it remains closed except for the fixed glazing on the upper level. When in use, folding shutters open to reveal dynamic views and connect the interior with the outdoors.

Inside, high-quality birch plywood defines a precisely detailed and multifunctional space. The walls integrate built-in storage, maximizing efficiency while enhancing spaciousness. The ground floor organizes sleeping alcoves, a bathroom, an entrance, and a small workspace in a seamless flow. The upper level houses an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area, with framed views offering both expansive panoramas and intimate connections to the forest floor.
