Preserving Historical Essence

Originally built in the late 19th century, this barn from Praz-de-Fort in Val d’Entremont was carefully dismantled and reconstructed a few kilometers away in Saleinaz. The relocation transformed the abandoned structure into a contemporary home while preserving its historical essence. The conversion introduced a new independent framework within the original barn envelope, creating a dynamic interplay of half-storeys that define an open and continuous living space.

Blending Old and New Elements

The spatial arrangement follows a vertical organization, with private areas like the bedroom and office placed in the upper levels, above the kitchen and living spaces. The existing balcony doors were retained and glazed, while new openings were strategically added to maintain the barn’s character and establish visual connections with the surrounding landscape. This careful approach ensured that modern comforts were introduced without compromising the rustic Alpine aesthetic.

Materiality and Atmosphere

Inside, oak paneling defines the new interior, adding warmth and continuity to the space. In contrast, the base features materials reminiscent of natural stone, reinforcing the connection between the new intervention and the Alpine landscape. The result is a harmonious blend of historic preservation and contemporary design, creating a home that is both respectful of its past and adapted for modern living.
