A memorial suspended in the high Alps
Set at 2528 meters above sea level in the Vertosan Valley of the Aosta region, the Bivacco Bredy is more than just a shelter—it is a tribute to Claudio Brédy, an alpinist and politician whose legacy shaped the project. Perched on a rock slab and accessible only by foot, the structure was officially inaugurated in 2021 through a collaboration between BCW Collective, YACademy, and local institutions. Its cantilevered design offers a striking visual contrast to the rugged alpine terrain while symbolizing both presence and loss.

A collective vision turned into form
The design was born from YACademy’s ‘Architecture for Landscape’ course, with key input from the Brédy family and mentorship by Roberto Dini. Emerging from a student competition, the winning proposal by BCW Collective—comprising Chiara Tessarollo, Skye Sturm, and Facundo Arboit—was chosen for its poetic and practical approach. The minimalist aesthetic reflects introspection, while the orientation and volume evoke Claudio’s passions for flight and exploration.

Architecture in dialogue with the mountains
Facing south towards Grivola and Gran Paradiso, the bivouac maximizes solar exposure in winter while maintaining a low impact on its surroundings. Dark aluminum cladding protects against the elements, and insulated timber walls preserve interior warmth. The layout is equally purposeful: six hanging bunks, a communal area, and a gear-friendly vestibule frame the alpine experience without distraction.

Minimal impact, lasting resonance
Entirely prefabricated and helicopter-assembled in just days, the hut sits on a steel frame foundation that minimizes its footprint and can be removed without trace. At once shelter and symbol, the Bivacco Bredy blends technical precision with emotional depth—offering refuge to hikers while standing as a quiet monument to Claudio Brédy’s enduring spirit.
