Multigenerational living

The Bretscha Extension reimagines a 1960s house in Schaan, Liechtenstein, transforming it into a contemporary home for three generations. Tucked between an old printworks and an office building, the property gains new life through a careful reorganisation and vertical extension. A tree in the garden, long central to the identity of the house, now becomes a key element of the architectural dialogue.

From single-family house to shared dwelling

Once an oversized single-family home, the structure now accommodates two distinct apartments stacked atop each other. The lower unit remains largely untouched, preserving its original character apart from minimal interventions such as new conduit openings and fresh paint. This sensitive approach maintains the authenticity of the garden-level dwelling while allowing for modern functionality.

Targeted interventions above

Upstairs, the original bedroom layout was retained and refined with precise modifications. The most striking transformation, however, lies above: the former attic space with its gabled roof was replaced by a generous new living area. Defined by large windows and a flowing spatial arrangement, this new volume expands the horizon and redefines the experience of living under the roof.

Dialogues with surroundings

The new top floor opens outwards—to the garden and its iconic tree, and beyond to the peaks of the Drei Schwestern mountains. The composition of views and daylight turns the added volume into more than just a spatial extension: it becomes a lens through which the surroundings are experienced anew.
