Reworking a lakeside legacy
On the edge of Lake Maggiore, Kollektiv Marudo Architects have renovated a slender property that spans from a mountain road to the lakefront, offering uninterrupted views of the Brissago Islands. The project retains the charm and proportions of the original ensemble—a main house and an attached rustico from 1941—while integrating thoughtful updates. A new bedroom and subtle spatial reconfiguration modernize the layout without altering the home’s traditional lake-facing presence.

Respecting tradition through careful intervention
The rustico has been restored with precision, transformed into a guest house that balances its historic character with a minimalist sensibility. A modest concrete extension accommodates contemporary needs without overwhelming the original form. The restrained design strategy emphasizes continuity, allowing both structures to maintain their Alpine identity while adapting to new use. Material choices and scale remain in harmony with the region’s architectural vernacular.

Connecting architecture and terrain
To improve access from the upper road, a delicate lift tower has been introduced. Designed with a light touch, it connects a new parking platform to the main residence without disturbing the terrain. The vertical element blends into the site, providing a functional solution that respects both the slope and the visual context. This infrastructural addition underscores the project’s balance between utility and sensitivity.

Views and comfort in equal measure
Throughout the home, large openings frame views of Lake Maggiore while preserving the rhythm of the original facade. The renovation enhances comfort and flow while maintaining the atmosphere of a lakeside retreat. Materials and spatial organization reflect both restraint and refinement, resulting in a contemporary Alpine dwelling that honors its heritage and setting with quiet elegance.
