Certain traditional Alpine constructions embody principles that resonate with contemporary architecture, emphasizing functionality, simplicity, and harmony with the environment. This philosophy is at the heart of the restoration of “Casa Gianìn,” part of a broader project involving several rustic buildings in the village of Coi, nestled in the Zoldo Valley of the Dolomites. These structures are a testament to a vanished way of life, shaping the unique Alpine landscape and inspiring designs that honor and sustain what already exists.

The Casa Gianìn project sought to create three independent residential units while restoring the original stone-built house to its landmark status. By eliminating later additions, the house regained its authentic form, anchoring it within the cultural fabric of the village. A newly constructed extension complements the historic building, maintaining independence in form and function while reinterpreting traditional rural architecture. The new structure, built from untreated larchwood over a stone substructure, reflects the classic tabià of the region. Larchwood, chosen for its aging qualities and minimal maintenance needs, exemplifies the balance between sustainability and timeless design.

Sustainability was integral to the project, influencing not only material selection but also the entire construction process. Locally sourced larch and the expertise of local craftsmen ensured that traditional techniques were preserved and celebrated. This approach minimized environmental impact while supporting the socio-cultural fabric of the region. By merging traditional craftsmanship with low-impact construction technology, the project embodies a deep respect for Alpine heritage, fostering a sense of continuity between past and present in both architecture and community.
