A Remote Alpine Landmark
The Voisthaler Hut replaces an earlier refuge high in the Upper Dullwitz valley, appearing as a clear and compact volume within the alpine terrain near Thörl. Positioned between Hochschwab, Wetterkogel, Karlhochkogel, and Fölzsattel, it acts as a visible orientation point while maintaining a restrained architectural presence.

Architecture Shaped by Access and Climate
The exposed high-altitude setting demanded careful responses to snowfall, avalanche risk, and limited infrastructure. Due to the autarkic location, all materials, machinery, and specialists were transported by helicopter, making prefabricated timber construction the most efficient and logical building method.

A Contemporary Interpretation of the Schutzhaus
With its compact form and reduced expression, the hut translates the traditional idea of a mountain shelter into a contemporary context. Accommodation, protection, and accessibility are combined with environmental responsibility, balancing modern tourism requirements with respect for the surrounding landscape.

Weathering as Design Strategy
The facade is defined by an irregular cladding of rough-sawn, untreated larch timber slats. Over time, weather and exposure will transform the surface, allowing the building to gradually merge with its surroundings. Inside, exposed cross-laminated timber and wooden floorboards create a warm, honest atmosphere shaped by material clarity.
