Dialogue with the landscape
Set in a forest clearing above the Conthey plain, this renovated log chalet orients its gable facades toward the slope, while the long sides open to the woods. A corrugated metal roof shelters the original structure, visually linking it to the surrounding conifers. This simple material gesture also defines an outdoor stoop—a place of transition and connection between interior and landscape.

A tactile contrast
The dark exterior envelope contrasts with the bright, serene atmosphere indoors. The renovation preserves the building’s traditional character while introducing a refined material palette. On the ground floor, the layout revolves around a freestanding, multifunctional furniture piece in birch that organizes key domestic functions without touching the raw timber structure above.

An inner core of lightness
This central joinery element contains the kitchen, shelving, shower, stairs, library, and utility spaces. Its sculptural form varies in thickness and openness, creating moments of compression and release while allowing for uninterrupted movement around it. Laid side-by-side, Valaisan spruce slats define the path around the core, lending rhythm and warmth to each step.

Upstairs, space for retreat
The upper floor is organized as a dormitory for nighttime use, complemented by a private guest room screened behind translucent glazing. These quiet zones offer a calm refuge while maintaining a dialogue with the lower level’s open, fluid layout—a thoughtful spatial choreography shaped by local materials and a deep sensitivity to place.
