A layered response to growth
To accommodate its shift toward daycare operations, the Davos Platz school complex required expanded space for dining, learning, and administration. Rather than demolishing the 1960s structure, CURA Architekten proposed a hybrid solution that preserves the core building while extending and upgrading it to meet modern needs.

Invisible transformation
A new timber structure wraps around the original, forming a unified outer shell that enhances thermal performance and visual identity. Though 40% of the final volume remains from the old building, the cohesive facade and added third floor give the impression of entirely new construction.

Flexible spaces, natural flow
The extensions rely on a timber grid system that redistributes loads and creates spacious circulation zones. A central atrium connects the upper floors and allows students to move between old and new layers. Open corridors and mezzanines support both group learning and quiet retreat, enriching the school environment.

Sustainable by design
Regional wood, cork floors, and sheep’s wool acoustics give the interiors warmth and character. The low-tech climate concept uses cross-ventilation and a central chimney-like atrium to regulate air naturally. A geothermal system and rooftop photovoltaics help the building meet its energy demands sustainably.
