Simple structure, strong identity
The Fire Station Bühl enhances the village streetscape with a clear, confident form that follows the curve of the main road. Designed by Alpstein Architekten and completed in 2023, the one-storey building serves the volunteer fire brigade of Bühl am Alpsee. Built under the principle of “simple, high-quality construction,” it balances functionality, cost-efficiency, and regional character.
Essential and efficient
With just 340 square metres of usable space, the building includes a vehicle hall, support rooms, and a training space. Its compact timber volume sits on a thermally activated concrete slab and is powered by geothermal probes and a photovoltaic system. Wood sourced from the local municipal forest was used throughout, and fire brigade members contributed to interior cladding and exterior painting using leftover materials.
Grounded in the region
The red facade, treated with a linseed oil-based pigment, echoes the colour of fire engines and highlights the building’s purpose. Its restrained form and honest use of materials reflect the architects’ roots in Vorarlberg timber construction. Triple-glazed wood-aluminium windows provide daylight while staying concealed behind timber slats that increase security and privacy.
Functional and communal
The building’s layout follows the operational needs of the brigade, with direct connections between garage, changing rooms, offices, and a small outdoor area. The furnishings are simple and durable. More than just a facility, the fire station is a place of collective effort and new identity for the community.
