A Modern Interpretation
The Service Centre stands as a monolithic and contemporary volume in the heart of the Valtellina valley. The building’s grey plaster facade, punctuated by irregularly arranged windows and loggias, subtly echoes the historic Alpine architecture of its surroundings. Timber window frames add a domestic touch, while the pitched roof pays homage to traditional buildings of the region.

A Simple Gesture
The structure uses a concrete plinth to manage the change in elevation, housing a parking garage and technical rooms. Above, the facade is set back from Via Mortirolo, creating a raised square that separates pedestrian and vehicular access, creating a protected space for users. This simple gesture adds much needed usable public space to the urban fabric.

Multi-Use for Diverse Needs
The upper volume is divided into two main areas. The single-storey wing hosts a nursery school and a school canteen, featuring large halls with coffered laminated timber ceilings. Adjacent to this, a multi-storey volume contains housing for self-sufficient elderly residents, along with shared spaces. Each space is designed with its users in mind, from children to the elderly.

Framing the Landscape
Inside, the irregular placement of windows and loggias offers carefully framed views of the surrounding Alpine landscape. In the nursery, children enjoy outward vistas, while in the residential units, the exterior is accessible even from a bed or armchair. The result is a contemporary volume that integrates well into the existing urban fabric while coherently interpreting both the historic environment and the complex program required by the people that live here.
