Reviving an Alpine Legacy
HousE.ART in Podkoren, Slovenia, is a sensitive renovation of a 1940s family home that honors its Alpine heritage while reimagining it for modern living. The original stone semi-basement, wooden gabled structure, and green shutters remain intact, preserving the building’s historic charm. The project’s name reflects the heart motifs found throughout the house, symbols of warmth and continuity that inspired the architectural narrative.
Blending Past and Present
ML arhitektura approached the renovation with respect for both cultural identity and environmental responsibility. Using recyclable materials like stone wool insulation and locally produced clay roof tiles, the design minimizes ecological impact while enhancing energy efficiency. Every intervention—whether structural or aesthetic—aims to preserve the spirit of the Alpine vernacular, creating a seamless dialogue between tradition and contemporary functionality.
Craftsmanship and Detail
Inside, the renovation celebrates craftsmanship through extensive woodwork and locally sourced materials. New additions are clearly distinguished from the restored elements, with dark parquet flooring contrasting softly against light wooden furniture. Custom larch windows and restored doors highlight the home’s original rhythm, while innovative internal insulation preserves the authenticity of the wooden ceilings—an intricate balance between performance and heritage.
Art in Architecture
A new fireplace, created in collaboration with artist Jaša, transforms the living room into a sculptural composition of green tiles with heart motifs. Each handcrafted piece bridges art and architecture, symbolizing renewal and connection. The integration of traditional joinery, reclaimed timber, and artisanal detailing ensures that HousE.ART stands as both a sustainable home and a living tribute to Alpine craftsmanship.
