The House Eggemoa

The House Eggemoa

Location: Mühlwald, Südtirol, Italian Alps

Year: 2024

Architecture: Daniel Ellecosta

Situated on a gentle hillside in the South Tyrolean village of Mühlwald, Haus Eggemoa transforms a former mill site into a modern home for a young farming family. The design draws from the valley’s traditional agricultural structures, maintaining a strong connection to its rural surroundings. A massive wooden volume rests on a sandblasted concrete base, with a gently sloping roofline that blends harmoniously into the landscape. The untreated larch wood facade features structured vertical and horizontal elements, creating a dynamic interplay of depth and texture. A defining feature is the south-facing bay window and balcony, which extend the living space outward while offering sweeping mountain views.

Sustainable Materials and Thoughtful Integration

Sustainability and locality are central to the project’s construction. The base consists of exposed concrete with locally sourced aggregates, while the solid wooden walls, crafted from the farm’s own timber, require no additional insulation. Larch wood is used for all exterior finishes, with simple metal railings and a grey metal roof subtly complementing the overall aesthetic. Due to the site’s topography, access is provided from the north via a short footbridge leading directly to the upper entrance level. Inside, an open-plan living area unfolds beneath the sloping roof, centered around a wood stove that serves as a subtle divider between spaces. Large openings frame panoramic views, enhancing the home’s connection to nature.

Seamless Flow Between Indoors and Outdoors

The lower level houses private quarters, including three bedrooms and a bathroom, with direct access to a sheltered outdoor extension nestled into the hillside. A hidden passage from the master bedroom leads to a dressing area and a protected outdoor space, reinforcing the seamless integration of indoor and outdoor living. Below, the second basement level accommodates a workshop and storage rooms, with a discreet pathway linking the residence to the adjacent barn and agricultural buildings. Every element of the layout is designed for both functionality and a deep-rooted connection to the landscape.

Material Honesty and Contemporary Craftsmanship

Haus Eggemoa’s interior reflects the same material honesty as its exterior. Solid larch wood and exposed concrete define the floors, walls, and custom furnishings, creating a cohesive and natural aesthetic. The careful balance of traditional craftsmanship and modern design results in a home that feels both timeless and contemporary. With its deep respect for Alpine building traditions and sustainable approach, Haus Eggemoa stands as a refined expression of vernacular architecture adapted to modern living.
