Embedded in the slope

House GP is a holiday home set on a hillside in Hohenthurn, Austria. Its volume stretches along the east-west axis, mirroring the terrain’s contours. A robust concrete base forms the foundations and semi-underground floor, anchoring the house to the hillside. This base supports a solid timber frame, clad entirely in wooden shingles native to the region, which continue seamlessly across the pitched roof to create a singular, continuous skin.

A dialogue with local identity

The architectural language references traditional Alpine building techniques while adopting a minimalist, contemporary expression. The use of untreated wood, familiar rooflines, and compact form evoke the vernacular architecture of the area. Yet, the execution is modern—precise geometries and restrained material palettes lend the structure a refined, timeless presence that integrates naturally into its mountainous surroundings.

Framing the landscape

A cantilevered terrace faces south, opening the house directly to the alpine landscape. This outdoor extension blurs the boundary between inside and out, while a sculptural chimney rising from the ground strengthens the visual dialogue with the terrain. These elements not only enhance the living experience but also anchor the building within the broader landscape narrative.

Openings with intention

Key to the project are its tall, full-height windows, which project subtly beyond the facade and are framed in aluminum. These south-facing apertures capture light and views, offering framed perspectives of the landscape. The choice of materials and detailing ensures the house retains both thermal efficiency and architectural clarity throughout the year.
