A reinterpretation of Alpine rural heritage
Located in a small farming hamlet in the Slovenian Alps, House Š reimagines the regional vernacular through a contemporary lens. Drawing influence from an old farmhouse and its adjacent hayrack, the design features a dominant wooden framework that extends fluidly from the facade into the interior. This architectural gesture unites past and present, establishing a strong material and conceptual continuity throughout the home.
Sculpted by the slope
The sloping terrain plays a critical role in shaping the house’s structure, resulting in a partially sunken concrete basement. This lower level houses a generous garage, multi-purpose service areas, and a cozy country-style room, adding both utility and rural character to the design. The use of exposed concrete offers a grounded counterpoint to the tactile warmth of the wood above.
Layered living under the roof
On the upper floor, the layout unfolds dramatically toward the ridge, where the ceiling follows the pitch of the roof to create a spacious living area. Sleeping quarters are integrated into this level, while a gallery above is designed as a playful and practical zone for the homeowners’ grandchildren. Subtle alpine references—both in form and atmosphere—reinforce the connection to regional building traditions without reverting to pastiche.
A porch that binds and shelters
To the east, a covered porch acts as both a functional and symbolic element. This elongated outdoor space doubles as a transitional corridor, linking the ground-floor rooms while echoing the communal spaces of historic rural dwellings. Through its refined balance of traditional cues and modern expression, House Š offers a thoughtful architectural response to its agricultural setting.
