With this renovated 1920s single-family home in Winterthur for a four-person family, the goal was to create open spaces and strengthen the connection to the garden. By unfolding the roof, a spacious living area with a high eaves height was achieved. A wooden terrace connects the house to the lower-lying garden via a staircase, while the cantilevered roof shelters the entrance and provides space for bicycles and a stroller.

The ground floor opens onto the terrace with a southwest-facing living area. The first floor houses the bedrooms, with a three-layer panel staircase leading to the new attic space. This retreat offers panoramic views of the neighborhood rooftops and nearby forested hills through glazed gables. A surrounding double-glazed facade seamlessly connects interior and exterior, while three-layer panels on the floor and ceiling add warmth and frame the view.

The floating roof rests on existing and newly added beams and is equipped with a photovoltaic system serving as roofing. Visible counter-battening blends with blue-colored edges, integrating the new structure with the original. Additional storage is provided through floor hatches along the knee wall. This thoughtful combination of historic and modern elements results in a sustainable, light-filled home with high design quality.
