Vertical path through a layered landscape

The Ibexmuseum St. Leonhard rises from a wooded slope in Tirol’s alpine valley, telling the story of the ibex’s extinction and reintroduction. Rather than spreading across the hillside, the museum is vertically structured, guiding visitors upward through a compact sequence of spaces before reaching the outdoor ibex enclosure.

Referencing the vernacular with modern clarity

Standing beside one of the valley’s oldest farmhouses, the tower-like structure follows the footprint of a former barn. Its precast concrete facade, shaped by timber formwork, recalls the texture of traditional wood construction. The building’s reddish tones set it apart while subtly referencing historic forms.

Connecting architecture and terrain

A bold red steel bridge connects the top floor to the slope beyond, allowing direct access to the ibex enclosure. This striking element not only overcomes the steep site but reinforces the museum’s central idea: a physical and narrative ascent that links architecture, exhibition, and surrounding landscape.

Robust materials with regional resonance

The structure is made of reinforced concrete with prefabricated facade elements. Steel is used for windows and the bridge, both painted in red. Inside, oak stairs and reddish-grey terrazzo floors provide warmth, while the restaurant is lined with local stone pine, anchoring the building in its alpine context.
