From barn to learning space

Set along the Adda River valley between Traona and Cosio Valtellino, this former barn on the island of Pescaia has been thoughtfully transformed into an educational classroom. Located beside the Valtellina path—a popular cycling and walking route—the project preserves the original stone structure while introducing new functions that reconnect the site with its surroundings. Once a rural agricultural space, the building now offers a place for learning, reflection, and community interaction in a setting defined by its close relationship with the landscape.

Preserving history with a new layer

The renovation centres around the insertion of a wooden interior shell within the existing stone walls, creating a warm, functional core while respecting the original architecture. A ground floor extension accommodates the larger space needed for group learning activities. This new blackened wood volume forms a striking visual contrast with the rugged stone facade of the old barn. A full-height glazed opening mirrors the dimensions of the interior space and frames the dense forest beyond, turning the surrounding woodland into a key part of the educational experience.

A subtle intervention in the landscape

Rather than impose on its context, the project responds to the existing topography and scale with restraint. The extension and glazing articulate a clear boundary between old and new without disrupting the integrity of the original structure. Along the adjacent Valtellina path, a small public space has been created in white concrete, defined by timber benches and shaded by a hazelnut tree. This gathering area serves as a pause point for visitors and an informal play zone for children, inviting passersby to linger and engage with the site.

Material contrasts and community value

The material palette plays a vital role in establishing dialogue between the intervention and its Alpine context. The rough stone of the original barn contrasts with the dark timber of the extension and the pale concrete of the outdoor space, creating a dynamic yet cohesive ensemble. By merging heritage preservation with contemporary needs, the project enriches the Valtellina path experience, offering a thoughtful new use for a rural structure while reinforcing the cultural and social value of the landscape.
