Preserving a Vernacular Structure

Perched in a hamlet above Bruson, this former barn was on the brink of collapse when it was rescued by a couple captivated by its Alpine surroundings. The transformation balances restoration with renewal, respecting the original structure while ensuring comfort and durability. What once was a deteriorating agricultural shelter now stands as a compact yet refined dwelling.

New Foundations for Living

Originally built without a foundation, the barn stood directly on earth. To adapt it for modern habitation, a concrete base was constructed, and a discreet rear extension was added. This addition accommodates two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a technical room, enabling a complete residential program. The first floor is devoted entirely to a 35-square-metre open-plan living space, cleverly designed to maximize both functionality and openness.

Aerial Reconstruction Strategy

Access challenges on the steep site required a bold approach: the barn was completely dismantled, and new timber-frame walls were flown in by helicopter. Once assembled, the original wooden facade boards were treated and reinstalled with precision. This technique not only preserved the visual authenticity of the structure but also allowed for thermal and structural upgrades invisible from the outside.

Interior Harmony and Craftsmanship

Inside, a dialogue between old and new materials defines the atmosphere. Larch wood dominates, chosen for its warm tone and durability, while modern interventions remain subtle. A bespoke built-in wall unit spans the living space, integrating the kitchen, storage, and a reading nook into one seamless element. The result is a compact Alpine home that feels both grounded in tradition and distinctly contemporary.
