Preserving the Barn’s Character

In the Ahrntal valley of South Tyrol, the Maireggerhof revives a traditional cow barn as a refined residence. Due to regional building restrictions, the original facade had to be preserved. The design responds by introducing a modern interior layout that works entirely within the existing envelope. Skylights bring daylight deep into the space, while the barn’s original timber structure remains in use as a defining spatial framework.

Light and Structure in Harmony

Rather than hiding the historic character, the layout enhances it. Exposed beams and columns are not only retained but serve as visual and functional dividers between living zones. This respectful reuse maintains the rhythm of the old barn while creating a contemporary flow of space. Carefully positioned openings in the roof and discreet internal partitions ensure that the building feels light-filled and open.

A Modern Core Below

To support the renovation, a solid new foundation of stone and concrete was inserted below the historic volume. This intervention ensures long-term structural integrity while subtly modernising the building’s base. The addition is visually unobtrusive yet essential to the transformation from barn to home.

Locally Rooted Interiors

The interior surfaces are clad in locally sourced wood, echoing traditional Alpine materials while bringing warmth and precision to every room. The floorplan accommodates three bedrooms, a kitchen, dining and living area, a playroom, and an office. The result is a striking balance of old and new, quietly embedded in the South Tyrolean landscape.
