A precise addition to an urban school complex
The extension of the HTL Bau & Design in Innsbruck adds a single floor to the main building, strengthening the school’s presence along a busy street. AO Architekten designed the new volume to align with the existing structure while subtly elevating its character. Despite the dense urban setting, the result feels balanced and restrained.

Light-filled interiors with panoramic views
Inside, the new level offers open, transparent spaces. Continuous ribbon windows provide sweeping views across Innsbruck, while a lamella-style roof ensures soft, even daylight. The few supporting columns allow for a fluid layout that suits design-focused teaching.

Bridging old and new through detail
The project integrates existing circulation by extending staircases and enclosing former open areas. A recessed seating zone and exposed concrete cores tie the extension to the original building, both functionally and materially, enhancing spatial flow throughout the school.

Flexible spaces for contemporary learning
The extension supports diverse teaching formats, from traditional classrooms to open study zones. Quiet areas, group rooms, and break spaces are arranged for everyday use and adaptable for exhibitions or events, expanding the school’s academic and social potential.
