Preserving identity in a modern transformation
Once a seasonal refuge for a farmer tending his cows, this mountain chalet in Lù Chatarme, near Arolla, has been sensitively renovated to balance tradition with comfort. The project stems from a deep engagement with local customs, ensuring that the chalet retains its historical essence while enhancing its habitability. The challenge was to modernize the space without compromising its character—a question of how a mountain shelter can evolve while remaining true to its roots.

A dialogue with landscape and history
The renovation respects the existing wooden structure, introducing only minimal changes. A single staircase leads to a new first-floor space designed for six occupants, constructed from larch wood harvested from the family’s own forest—trees planted when the chalet was first built. This continuity between past and present reinforces a deep connection to the land, making the renovation feel like a natural evolution rather than an imposition.

Seamlessly integrating with the landscape
The stone section of the chalet harmonizes with the surrounding rock, its form guided by the terrain rather than altering it. Concrete, with its mineral texture, blends with the stone, while wooden window frames mirror the iron oxide hues of the landscape. The interiors remain faithful to the spirit of an Alpine shelter—timber walls, low ceilings, and the original wood stove preserving the warmth of tradition.

A fusion of past and present
While the original elements evoke the chalet’s heritage, subtle modern additions enhance its functionality. A contemporary concrete fireplace in the mineral section provides a striking yet understated contrast to the rustic interiors. This space invites communal gathering, whether for Swiss Raclette or quiet moments by the fire, reaffirming the chalet’s role as a timeless retreat within the Alpine landscape.
