The Vineyard Cottage

The Vineyard Cottage

Location: Kozjankso, Slovenia

Year: 2016

Architecture: Kombinat

Photography: Janez Marolt

The Vineyard Cottage, located in the wine-growing hills of eastern Slovenia, beautifully reimagines a traditional regional structure. Originally a simple building typical of the area, it has been transformed by Kombinat Architects into a modern retreat. The ground floor retains its function as a wine cellar, while the newly designed first floor offers a cozy living space for occasional vineyard visits. This thoughtful blend of old and new reflects the cottage’s connection to its cultural and natural surroundings.

The renovation features a striking new wooden structure built entirely from cross-laminated timber (CLT), perched above the wine cellar. Its façade is equipped with manually operated sliding shutters that can be adjusted in segments, giving the client control over how much of the façade to open. The wood is treated with grey oil paint, which develops a natural patina over time, ensuring the house ages gracefully while requiring minimal maintenance. These large shutters not only enhance the design but also provide cooling shade, filtering light even when closed.

The house’s design is rooted in duality: when unoccupied, it presents itself as a discreet, closed object blending into the landscape. In contrast, when in use, it opens up to connect with its surroundings, offering panoramic views of the rolling hills. This dynamic interplay between seclusion and openness makes the Vineyard Cottage a harmonious retreat, deeply attuned to its environment.
