The municipality of Moncenisio has entrusted the restoration of two former barracks to the Politecnico di Torino and Coutan Architects. Designed with a minimal budget and a low-tech approach, the project focuses on sustainability and the circular economy. The wooden trilithic structures and simple volumes optimize resources while preserving the historical character of the site. This initiative sets a precedent for contemporary Alpine architecture by demonstrating how adaptive reuse can be both cost-effective and environmentally responsible.

Adaptive reuse for community needs
Located at nearly 1,500 meters above sea level, the former military barracks of Moncenisio are being transformed to serve new functions. The larger building, constrained by hydrogeological factors, will host cultural events and an alpine garden, while the smaller one will feature two wooden structures: a compact artist residence and a multipurpose community hall. This functional diversification fosters local engagement and cultural exchange, reinforcing the social fabric of this remote Alpine settlement.

Sustainable materials and energy efficiency
The project juxtaposes the rugged stone walls of the barracks with new wooden structures made from locally sourced larch, creating a monolithic aesthetic. Wood from Val di Susa, sourced within 20 kilometers, ensures a sustainable and short supply chain. Energy-efficient design, including high-performance insulation, biomass stoves, and photovoltaic panels, guarantees energy independence. By blending historical preservation with sustainable innovation, the Moncenisio barracks project serves as a model for future Alpine revitalization efforts.
