Sanctuary on the ridge
Positioned on a gentle crest in the Vorarlberg Alps, the Chapel Alpe Niedere invites visitors to pause between two mountain paths. It gently signals the transition from cultivated terrain to the open expanse of the high Alps. Accessed via a traditional church trail, the entrance leads into a quiet space of retreat and reflection.

Immersion in material and light
Inside, the chapel presents a compact space crafted entirely from timber. Its walls, floor, and ceiling emerge from a uniform construction principle, reinforcing a feeling of enclosure and calm. A single glass slit behind the altar draws daylight deep into the space, creating a direct link between the interior and the ever-shifting alpine surroundings.

Architecture in dialogue with the land
While the chapel appears closed, its structure is deeply attuned to its environment. The orientation follows the slope, and the interior opens toward the valley through the experience of light. From the edge of the site, visitors overlook steep terrain—yet within, they are held in a space of stillness. The altar wall floats apart from the ceiling and side walls, enhancing the sacred atmosphere.
