Modular transformation of a civic hub
In response to the growing population of Langen bei Bregenz, the existing Gemeindehaus was transformed into a multi-functional community center. This process began with the expansion of the kindergarten and culminated in the relocation of the local music society to a new, elevated attic level. Rather than expanding horizontally, the project focused on optimizing the existing site, introducing a phase-based redevelopment strategy that anticipates future spatial needs while minimizing land use.

Architecture through elevation
The project’s most striking architectural move was the removal of the original roof and the addition of a new timber structure. This new upper level houses the rehearsal rooms and music hall and integrates a photovoltaic system that powers the building. The wide-span attic volume, supported by visible trusses, creates generous column-free interiors that emphasize the building’s structural clarity and acoustic performance.

Abstract clarity and visual restraint
Visually, the new addition deliberately contrasts with the restored facade below. Its minimalistic and strategically placed openings create a calm and contemporary presence, allowing the existing structure to retain its identity. The design refrains from imitation, instead offering a refined architectural layer that distinguishes old from new without overpowering either.

A meeting place for all generations
Beyond the architectural interventions, the reconfigured Gemeindehaus offers enhanced accessibility and redefined interior layouts, including a larger council chamber and a shared foyer. This generous threshold space supports informal encounters between municipal staff, musicians, and residents—emphasizing the building’s role as a civic and cultural heart of the village.
