In the Tyrolean municipality of Wenns, an educational center has been developed. The project involved renovating the existing elementary school, including an attached gymnasium, and adding a childcare facility. The project approach takes a clear stance on the existing structure, aiming to continue the story and architectural evolution of the Tyrolean municipality without making significant additional gestures.

The existing elementary school consists of a ground floor, basement, upper floor, and attic. The ground floor houses classrooms, the library, and restroom facilities. The upper floor contains classrooms for grades 4 through 6, as well as the conference room, principal’s office, and auxiliary rooms. The attic is designated for the school’s teaching materials, a multipurpose meeting room, and the childcare facility. The first basement level includes the workshop with auxiliary rooms and the gymnasium with changing facilities.
A three-story new building for a kindergarten and nursery is being constructed in a gap between the gymnasium and the multipurpose building. The urban planning concept strengthens the existing architectural setting by completing it in a coherent manner. The new structure, inspired by the tradition of high-quality, site-specific, and landscape-integrated architecture, harmonizes with its surroundings in both scale and design, while embracing a contemporary architectural language. The redesign of the school plaza and the use of the rooftop landscape are part of a broader concept. These changes provide a space for everyday schoolyard activities as well as outdoor events, such as school or community festivals.

All floors, including the new rooftop landscape, are barrier-free and accessible via an enclosed staircase with an elevator. Both kindergarten floors feature open cloakroom areas connected to a corridor. From this corridor, the group rooms, marketplace, director’s office, changing room, activity room, staff room, and an independently functioning partition room are accessible. The spatial aesthetics resemble those of a thoughtfully designed single-family home with an open floor plan, creating a welcoming and homely atmosphere for children and caregivers alike.
