A calm setting designed around children’s needs

Located between the Grindel Canal and Hasenfeldstrasse, the Engelbach Kindergarten is a compact, two-story building that balances a homely feel with the demands of contemporary education. Innauer Matt Architekten placed the structure away from the street to open up generous public outdoor spaces, including a community playground. These spaces strengthen the bond between daily routines and the surrounding landscape, offering room to explore and play.

Light-filled interiors and outdoor connections

Inside, the layout is structured to support both movement and calm. Three staircases help manage busy arrival and departure times, while the upper floor—called the “Belletage”—hosts five group units with activity and communication zones. All rooms face southeast, ensuring warm, natural light during key morning hours. Weather-protected terraces extend the learning spaces and maintain a close connection to the outdoor setting year-round.

Material clarity with a regional character

The kindergarten’s architecture features natural wood, mineral elements, and finely detailed windows, resulting in an understated yet warm atmosphere. The interior palette supports both comfort and creativity, with flexibility built in for educators and children. The mixed structure of concrete and prefabricated timber meets current sustainability standards, using regional resources and renewable energy systems to reduce its environmental impact.
