The Extension with Roof Pyramid

The Extension with Roof Pyramid

Location: Vorarlberg, Austrian Alps

Year: 2024

Architecture: MW Architekten

The extension with a roof pyramid transforms a multi-party house through a thoughtful ground-floor renovation. Instead of building a detached home on a vacant family plot, the owners opted to expand their existing residence. This approach prioritizes densification over greenfield development, seamlessly integrating the extension with the original structure. The design respects the surrounding townscape, maintaining the character of the neighborhood while introducing modern living spaces.

Designed for contemporary open-plan living, the south-facing extension balances openness with privacy. It shields the east-facing garden from the nearby main road, creating a tranquil outdoor space. The structure stands independently next to the original house, with its elongated form and pyramid-shaped roof defining a new address for the family. Natural light plays a key role in the design, with a central skylight illuminating the interior, making the living area more introspective than outward-facing.

A dynamic sequence of spaces flows from the entrance to the terrace with a pergola. Windows are strategically placed to respond to interior functions, varying along the facade. The dining area extends into the landscape through frameless, threshold-free openings, allowing for a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors. This integration enhances the sense of space, creating a home where architecture and nature interact harmoniously.
