Strengthening the village core

In response to the decline of its traditional center, the town of Gloggnitz—an industrial community in the Austrian Prealps—chose to consolidate its educational institutions in a bold new school complex. Located near the town center, the building replaces two outdated structures and unites three previously separate schools. This strategic move not only prioritizes education and youth but also reinvigorates the heart of the community, signaling a commitment to long-term development and family-friendly infrastructure.

A clear structure with civic presence

The base of the building is fully glazed, making the ground floor a transparent interface with the town. Positioned at a generous forecourt, the northwest entrance welcomes students and visitors under a wide canopy formed by the cantilevered first floor. Inside, the architectural core of the design is revealed: a triple-height central sports area illuminated by skylights and spanned by a lightweight steel framework. This open, multifunctional volume supports the school’s integrative pedagogical approach, with movement and physical activity placed at its heart.

Flexible learning in a shared space

Teaching spaces for all three school types are located on the first floor and organized around a timber-clad roof terrace. Skylight lanterns structure the space and allow for outdoor learning in an open-air classroom setting. The classrooms are arranged in clusters around shared “marketplaces,” enabling cross-disciplinary and collaborative teaching. This layout supports modern educational models and strengthens the sense of community across age groups and school levels.

A future-facing civic hub

The second floor houses staff and administrative functions, positioned to give the building visual weight and architectural balance. Alongside the school’s educational role, the facility opens its doors to sports clubs, adult education programs, and public events. With its understated wooden facade and permeable layout, the school becomes more than a place of learning—it emerges as a cultural and civic hub for Gloggnitz, redefining how public buildings can serve both community and pedagogy.
