Hillside living reimagined
Situated on the edge of Brand in the Austrian Alps, The House in Brand transforms a steep plot into two distinct, low-energy residences. Designed as a response to the terrain, the project balances contemporary clarity with environmental sensitivity. Clean lines and bold forms root the volumes into the slope without dominating the Alpine landscape.

Two homes, one architectural vision
The project was initiated by the Durnwalder family, who envisioned a shared space with individual character. Architekturhandwerk answered with two self-contained houses, thoughtfully positioned for privacy and panoramic views. Their layout encourages a sense of retreat while still belonging to the same architectural language.

Materiality with meaning
Concrete and timber form a tactile dialogue across both buildings. Exposed concrete grounds the structure, while solid wood interiors create warmth and visual depth. This hybrid approach reflects both innovation and the Alpine building tradition, showcasing honest materials and precise craftsmanship.

Framing the landscape
A standout design move is the six-meter cantilever extending from the living areas, creating elevated views deep into the valley. This gesture connects the interiors with the surroundings and underscores the project’s commitment to quiet, immersive mountain living.
