About a century ago, this site was home to a modest farmhouse built by aging farmers who wanted to remain close to their main homestead. The traditional Austrian “Wälderhaus” served both as a compact living space and a functional barn, reflecting the practical rural lifestyle of the Bregenzerwald region. This dual structure allowed the older generation to stay active in daily farm life while supporting the younger family members nearby.

Respecting heritage through thoughtful expansion

When new ownership called for renovation, the project had to adhere to strict rules preserving the original footprint. Rather than disrupt the landscape or architectural lineage, the approach was rooted in restraint. The original residential wing remains nearly untouched, while the barn has been reimagined into a light-filled contemporary living space. The design prioritizes continuity with the past while opening the door to modern comfort and style.

Craftsmanship and contrasts in materiality

Distinct materials help distinguish the old from the new while maintaining a cohesive visual language. The original living quarters feature hand-laid shingle facades, compact Bregenzerwald windows, and functional folding shutters. In contrast, the renovated barn introduces vertical wood paneling, large glass openings, and sliding doors. Inside, a palette of local silver fir, ash, pine, and reclaimed wood creates warm, tactile transitions between traditional and contemporary spaces.

Seamless transitions between generations and spaces

Spatially, the renovation tackles the challenge of connecting compact, low-ceilinged rooms with more open and light-filled volumes. Creative solutions—like a multi-angled staircase offering new sightlines, or a fireplace anchoring both entry and living areas—enhance flow and function. Outdoors, pathways gently trace the hillside, and a sculptural garage embedded in the terrain blends seamlessly into the meadows, honoring both architectural ingenuity and the Alpine surroundings.
