Integrated into the hillside
Above the village of Egg, The House Kaltenbrunnen occupies a steep slope at the forest’s edge, offering wide views over the Bregenzerwald. Accessed by 70 steps, the vacation home reuses the foundations of a former 1980s structure, slightly shifted to create a forecourt with a concrete fountain.

Quiet presence, clear form
The black timber volume adapts to its surroundings with a gabled roof and stepped layout that follows the terrain. Despite its minimalist language, the three-storey solid wood house asserts a confident presence while harmonizing with nearby buildings.

Warmth through structure
Inside, cross-laminated timber defines both structure and atmosphere. Compact bedrooms on the lower floor invite retreat, while the multi-level living area opens to the terrace and forest beyond. A central wood stove provides heat and anchors the space.

Rooted in material logic
Built atop a stepped base to stabilize the slope, the house uses regional, renewable materials throughout. Wood-fiber insulation, oiled ash floors, and a ventilated facade ensure climate sensitivity. Infrared panels supplement the stove without active cooling.
