Rooted in regional typology

This newly built timber house in Großarl reflects the traditions of Austrian Alpine architecture through its form, materiality, and sensitive siting. Designed with a classic gabled roof, the two-story home mirrors the scale and rhythm of surrounding buildings, contributing to the cohesion of the local village landscape. Its timber construction not only supports sustainability but also reinforces a strong connection to regional craftsmanship and natural building materials.

Efficient layout with thoughtful additions

The residence offers around 180m² of living space, structured around a clear and functional floor plan. A one-story annex, slightly offset from the main volume, marks the entrance and subtly separates the arrival area from the more private zones of the home. This architectural gesture creates a welcoming threshold and enhances the home’s street-facing presence. The layout balances openness with privacy, supporting everyday life while remaining grounded in its context.

Indoor-outdoor continuity across two levels

At the rear of the house, a two-story terrace opens the living spaces to the south-facing garden. Generous glazing on both floors brings daylight deep into the interior, while the terraced design encourages fluid transitions between inside and out. This spatial arrangement ensures that views and natural light are central to the experience of the home, without disrupting its calm, timber-clad exterior.

A fast build rooted in tradition

Construction was an efficient 10-month build that demonstrates the advantages of timber construction in Alpine conditions. The home’s structural and aesthetic clarity stems from its use of local materials, its adherence to traditional forms, and a commitment to enduring quality. Though contemporary in execution, the design remains fully embedded in the architectural culture of the region.
