Preserving a local legacy

Originally built in the traditional log style of the Bregenzerwald region, the M House in Grossdorf suffered partial destruction due to a fire. The reconstruction used salvaged materials from other demolished structures, emphasizing sustainable restoration. Misguided renovations from the 1970s had previously compromised the building’s character, but the current owners – a musician and an artist – are deeply committed to its cultural and architectural significance.

Reversing past mistakes

The design approach focused on removing inappropriate alterations and returning the house to its original typological clarity. With only subtle modern interventions, the structure now meets contemporary standards while honoring its historical essence. This careful balance allows the house to retain its identity while gaining renewed relevance, countering the broader decline of the traditional Bregenzerwald House form.

Cultural adaptation through architecture

The attached farm building has also been thoughtfully reimagined. While its volume and spatial logic remain intact, the former cow shed has been transformed into a multifunctional hall with a stage for music and small gatherings. This adaptive reuse not only respects the past but also creates new opportunities for cultural exchange and community involvement within a rural context.

Harmony between old and new

A new entrance zone with a generous sliding door introduces a shared, flexible area that connects various parts of the building. Throughout the house, historic and contemporary elements interact fluidly, with neither overpowering the other. The result is a composition that celebrates continuity and change in equal measure, reinforcing the importance of heritage in architectural innovation.
