A Trail Highlighting Alpine Beauty
The Path of Perspectives, designed by Snøhetta for the Nordkettenbahn, transforms the alpine surroundings of Innsbruck’s Nordkette mountain range with ten subtle architectural interventions. Stretching across 2.8 kilometers and a 142-meter elevation gain, the trail seamlessly weaves through the dramatic scenery, offering moments for reflection and awe. Accessible directly from Innsbruck via the Hungerburg and Nordkette funiculars, the route invites visitors to immerse themselves in the grandeur of the Northern Limestone Alps.

Subtle Architecture in Dramatic Surroundings
Each element along the trail, from benches to viewing platforms, blends naturally with the surrounding landscape. Snøhetta’s design philosophy emphasizes small, thoughtful gestures that amplify the beauty of the setting without overpowering it. Patrick Lüth, Managing Director of Snøhetta’s Innsbruck office, notes that the interventions enhance rather than dominate the visitor’s experience. These structures provide not just viewpoints but social gathering spots, encouraging a leisurely exploration of the alpine environment.

Structures Growing from the Landscape
Key features include a viewing platform that juts out over the terrain, offering sweeping views of the Inn Valley while creating a sensation of floating above the ground. A staircase highlights the transition from timberline to scrub pine vegetation, while wooden terraces around the “Big Stone” create natural resting areas. Higher up, stepped seating platforms form an informal amphitheater, inviting visitors to pause and engage with the landscape from various vantage points.

Materials Rooted in Context
The interventions are crafted from Corten steel, echoing the materiality of Nordkette’s avalanche barriers and integrating effortlessly into the landscape. Larch wood, native to the region, is used for seating and platforms, emphasizing a connection to local materials. Adding a thoughtful layer, inscriptions of quotes by philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein are integrated into the elements, encouraging visitors to reflect both internally and externally as they journey along this contemplative path.
