Contextual approach
The Private Clinic in Anif was designed with the dual challenge of creating a medical facility and finding an architectural expression suitable for the edge-of-town setting near Salzburg. Its serrated valley roofs establish a dialogue with the surrounding built environment, while playful details—such as window compositions resembling a winking face or staircase forms suggesting teeth—add unexpected character to the otherwise restrained exterior.

Red insulating concrete
The defining feature of the clinic is its bold use of red insulating concrete, or Dämmbeton. This material, with its rough surface, visible pores, and traces of formwork, contrasts strongly with the cautious architecture of its neighbors. More than a structural choice, it brings an ever-changing aesthetic: the concrete subtly shifts in tone with light and humidity, giving the building a dynamic presence that feels alive and reactive to its surroundings.

Program and layout
The project is organized vertically rather than horizontally. The ground floor houses a clinic dedicated to respiratory illnesses, while the upper floor accommodates two apartments. A circular, glass-walled reception space connects the two main volumes and provides a lighter counterpoint to the dense red concrete. The differing window arrangements and staircases in each volume further emphasize the individuality of the two parts while maintaining overall cohesion.

Interior atmosphere
Inside, the strong presence of red concrete appears again, emerging in the roof and thick window reveals, acting as a recurring motif. The clinic interiors are kept in off-whites and pastels, balancing warmth with a sense of clinical clarity. In contrast, the upstairs apartments use the same palette to foster a calm domestic atmosphere, enhanced by expansive views and natural light. The interplay of raw materiality and gentle finishes creates a building that feels both pragmatic and expressive.
