A dialogue between generations

A young family approached the architects with a wish to build their new home near the parents’ farmhouse in the Mühlviertel region of Upper Austria. The design used unused plots in the village’s core, strengthening the traditional settlement rather than expanding its borders. This approach not only preserved the rural structure but enriched it with a contemporary layer of life.

A contemporary longhouse in red

The building takes the form of a long volume with a hipped roof, echoing the elongated silhouettes of local farmhouses. Its red facade recalls the tone of the region’s old roof tiles, allowing the house to blend effortlessly into its agricultural surroundings. From the street, an exterior stair connects the entrance level with the cellar, ensuring direct access from the neighbouring family property and enhancing intergenerational connectivity.

Light, openness, and connection

At the heart of the ground floor lies an open living space with kitchen, dining area, and lounge extending up to the roof. A large window opens toward the terrace and the rolling hills beyond, creating a spatial dialogue between interior and landscape. The resulting atmosphere is both warm and expansive, inviting slow living and daily connection to the rural context.

Spaces for retreat and togetherness

Sleeping areas for parents and children are placed at opposite ends of the house, ensuring privacy while maintaining cohesion through shared central spaces. Above, open roof zones act as retreats — a gallery overlooking the living room or intimate sleeping alcoves for the children. The result is a home that bridges contemporary family life with regional building tradition, embodying both continuity and renewal.
