Upgrading the presence of the school

The School in Vorarlberg by AO Architekten redefines its local context through a thoughtful extension that balances scale and form. A new volume at the southeastern corner brings clarity to the existing vertical structure and enhances the school’s visibility in the village fabric. The architectural language remains grounded in the original palette of materials and colors, preserving a sense of continuity while introducing a measured contemporary expression.

Structural clarity through subtle intervention

Rather than a complete overhaul, the architects opted for targeted modifications that simplify and reorganize the school’s layout. A reworked entrance and new foyer strengthen spatial connections between indoors and outdoors, while secondary functions were relocated to the basement to allow for more generous communal spaces. The heart of the school—the central hall—was reinforced in its role as a communication and gathering hub, with an added stair core bridging old and new structures.

Functional zoning and spatial diversity

The extension’s positioning minimizes the need for additional circulation areas and introduces a clear functional zoning. Regular classrooms remain in the existing structure, while special-use rooms are housed in the new wing. Higher ceilings in the extension provide atelier-like qualities for the music and art rooms, creating a dynamic counterpart to the main hall and enhancing the spatial experience for students and teachers alike.

Architectural expression of educational focus

Large-format glazing in the new facade subtly reveals the interior activities and highlights the school’s artistic and musical orientation. This design strategy offers a transparent and confident identity for the only academic secondary school in the Bregenzerwald, making its educational profile visible not only to its users but to the broader community.
