The Utility Wing

Location: Wolfurt, Vorarlberg, Austrian Alps

Year: 2024

Architecture: MW Architekten

Photography: Adolf Bereuter

This replacement building reconstructs the utility wing of one of the first Rheintal houses along the historic village street. While the original residential section remains unchanged, the new structure within the volume of the former utility wing seeks to preserve the spatial and material qualities of the once commercially used building.

Traditional elements, reinterpreted
The design incorporates typical regional features, such as a simple timber facade, a few generous openings, a prominent gable triangle, and a cantilevered roof overhang. Shading elements and gates are executed as simple sliding or hinged panels, echoing the functionality of agricultural structures. The former threshing floor of the original barn now serves as a garage, while the roof covering has been preserved and supplemented with original tiles where necessary.

A discreet second entrance
As part of the transformation into an additional residential unit, the ensemble was given a new address. To maintain the historic character, the new entrance is placed on the east facade, away from the village street, ensuring minimal visual impact on the original structure.

Spatial continuity and future adaptability
The ground floor seamlessly extends into the generous garden, creating a fluid indoor-outdoor connection. Upstairs, children’s rooms and a spacious living area with a mezzanine for a home office provide flexibility. The open void also allows for potential densification in the future. The attic houses the parents’ suite, complete with a private rooftop terrace. Inside, a balance of wooden surfaces and light-toned clay plaster creates an airy and harmonious atmosphere, respecting the building’s history while embracing its new residential function.
